While no one would ever describe them as 'enjoyable', they are a perfectly normal biological function which just under half of the world's population deal with.
But, they remain a topic we keep hush-hush , especially - let's face it - around men.
One man who has no problem talking about the menstrual cycle is Marcus Steve.
Not only does the former Etihad cabin manager feel comfortable discussing periods, but, together with his wife, Jenny, he has come up with a very new, very different type of sanitary product.
The Hannahpad is bound to raise a few eyebrows. After all, disposing completely of tampons and pads (and the evidence of menstruation) has become the norm.
Now Melbourne-based Marcus and Jenny are challenging this with a pad which can be washed - and re-used for years.
As the MailOnline report, the Hannahpad "is a cost-effective, washable pad made from 100 per cent organic cotton that can be used for two to three years. "
After setting up their own business, the worked on the design.
The Hannahpad has a leak-proof coating and super absorbent cotton, which prevents any spillages. They come in different sizes, ranging from panty liners priced at $14.99 to super ultra overnight pads at $35.00.They're not cheap, but if they last for up to three years, in theory that's a massive saving made.
Mr Steve recommends rinsing the Hannahpad under cold water with their effective micro-organism soap and soak it over night and washing it in the washing machine.
Jenny had been using a very similar South Korean product after
experiencing difficulties with her cycle. Understandably, Marcus was
initially skeptical.
"I was in shock when she told me it was washable and I questioned the hygiene of it."However, further research uncovered some uncomfortable truths about feminine hygiene products - such as their containing "dioxins, herbicides and insecticides" all which resulted sometimes in infections and skin rashes.
To counter this, the Hannahpad is "environmentally sustainable, biodegradable and vegan friendly."
Which, when you factor in the 200,000 tonnes of feminine hygiene waste produced in the UK ALONE each year, whatever you make of the Hannahpad, these are points in its favour.
Marcus added, "It's not a mainstream product. We need to be open about it and the worst contributors are men.
"[Men] need to change their mindset about periods because most men have a woman in their life like their mothers, sisters, wife or girlfriend."
